Using Matrix Energetics, Integrative Manual Therapy, Complementary & Alternative Medicine for Health, Healing and the Pursuit of Happiness  by Kimberly Burnham, PhD Integrative Medicine

Alternative Care Critical to Integrative Oncology Programs

In cancer centers, hospitals, and clinics across the United States, physicians and cancer researchers are gradually beginning to incorporate complementary and alternative therapies into clinical oncology programs. The tunnel vision paradigm of traditional cancer care is now being expanded to included many aspects of integrative oncology, which stresses the treatment of much more than the tumor itself. This can be particularly important in the treatment of aggressive or clinically incurable cancers, like malignant mesothelioma.

While certainly mesothelioma disease is a malignancy from whose patients benefit greatly from complimentary cancer care, it is by no means the only one. Treatments like chemotherapy and radiation are known to cause extremely debilitating side-effects, including weight loss, lethargy, fatigue, hair loss, and nausea. What integrative oncology stresses is the treatment of these symptoms so that the patient will be better prepared for more aggressive traditional therapies. It is often the patients who are able to manage symptoms of traditional treatments that respond the best to the overall treatment regimen.

Treatments which are able to relieve anxiety and sleeplessness are often of value to cancer patients as well. Meditation, yoga, and other relaxation techniques can assist in maintaining a regular sleep schedule and easing anxiety of the disease itself. Patients undergoing surgery for mesothelioma, for instance , are often concerned about the extensive resection procedures necessary to eliminate the tumor effectively. Relaxation techniques are able to stabilize the patient’s emotion and make them more at peace with their treatment.

There are no scientific studies that show any definitive advantages to using craniosacral therapy in the treatment of cancer and other serious diseases. However, proponents of the treatment and patients who have experimented with its use note that - like many other complementary therapies - it may promote a feeling of relaxation and help relieve the stress associated with cancer, including that associated with malignant mesothelioma. Many cancer patients who’ve tried craniosacral therapy have noted a decrease in pain caused by the disease or treatments for the disease. Patients have also seen a reduction in headaches. Therapists also claim that craniosacral therapy can help enhance the immune system, though there is no proof of that claim.

In conjunction with traditional treatments, these complementary therapies are able to extend prognosis, including mesothelioma survival rate. All patients should speak with their primary physician or cancer specialist before commencing any tertiary treatment plan. That said, all patients are encouraged to explore any therapy which can assist in their cancer therapy.

Fibromyalgia (FM), Complementary & Alternative Medicine Energetic Solutions and Pain Relief

A recent study on massage therapy for symptoms relief published in Rheumatol Int made specific recommendations. "Massage therapy is widely used by patients with fibromyalgia seeking symptom relief. All reviewed studies showed short-term benefits of massage, and only one single-arm study demonstrated long-term benefits. The existing literature provides modest support for use of massage therapy in treating fibromyalgia. In massage therapy of fibromyalgia, we suggest that massage will be painless, its intensity should be increased gradually from session to session, in accordance with patient's symptoms; and the sessions should be performed at least 1-2 times a week." Kalichman, L. (2010). "Massage therapy for fibromyalgia symptoms." Rheumatol Int 30(9): 1151-1157. [Medline Abstract].

Another study noted, of the 304 patients invited to participate in The Mayo Fibromyalgia Program, 98% had used some type of CAM therapy during the previous 6 months. "The 10 most frequently used CAM treatments were exercise for a specific medical problem (48%), spiritual healing (45%), massage therapy (44%), chiropractic treatments (37%), vitamin C (35%), vitamin E (31%), magnesium (29%), vitamin B complex (25%), green tea (24%), and weight-loss programs (20%)." according to Wahner-Roedler, 2007.

This Transformational Shift Module focuses on evidence for the use of nutritional approaches; treatments that shift substance P plasma levels (acupuncture and massage therapy); modalities which affect the autonomic nervous system (Reiki, Integrative Manual Therapy), exercise, acupuncture and more. Leventhal, L. J. (1999). "Management of fibromyalgia." Ann Intern Med 131(11): 850-8 [Full Text]   .......notes the effectiveness of exercise, biofeedback, acupuncture, hypnotherapy and a multidisciplinary approach in the management of fibromyalgia.

Another article highlights the use of manual therapy to improve autonomic nervous system function, which can help a variety of conditions including fibromyalgia...... Wheeler, L. (2004). Advanced Strain Counterstrain. Massage Therapy Journal, 43 Winter(4), [Full Text]

Combined Complementary Medicine Approach for Knee Comfort and Range of Motion

More than a Dozen Treatments Found Beneficial for OA of the Knee

Medical research supports the use of more than a dozen different kinds of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) for knee problems. The following are treatments and techniques to improve function and decrease pain or stiffness in people with osteoarthritis.

Anything which decrease the disability caused by osteoarthritis (OA) is important simply because of the number of lives affected.

According to the Center for Disease Control, "arthritis is the nation’s leading cause of disability. Nearly 19 million U.S. adults reported activity limitations because of arthritis each year during 2003–2005. Each year, arthritis results in 750,000 hospitalizations and 36 million outpatient visits. Direct medical costs for arthritis were $81 billion in 2003. Arthritis is not just an old person’s disease. Nearly two-thirds of people with arthritis are younger than 65.

More than half of adults with diabetes or heart disease also have arthritis. The presence of arthritis can make it difficult to exercise and be active due to pain and limited motion."

A combined approach using complementary medicine seems to be best for osteoarthritis, one of the most common forms of arthritis seen in primary care practice. Pain associated with this condition is the chief complaint of most patients, prompting them to seek medical attention. Pain can originate from the synovial membrane, joint capsule, periarticular muscles and ligaments, and periosteum and subchondral bone, among other sources.

Although osteoarthritis is traditionally thought of as a noninflammatory type of arthritis, inflammatory mechanisms can be present. Therefore, management of osteoarthritic pain involves both nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic modes of therapy.

Nonpharmacologic approaches include osteopathic manipulative treatment, physical therapy, exercise, use of assistive devices, and weight reduction.

Although pain relief is a chief motivator for patients with osteoarthritis to seek medical attention, a secondary benefit of successful treatment is slowing the decrease in patients' quality of life. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Solutions

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Solutions
While fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is the most common nonhereditary cause of mental retardation, with deficits in general intellectual functioning, learning, memory, attention, and problem-solving, there are a number of solutions from the morphic fields of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).
Hyperbaric oxygen has shown some positive results with FAS as well as improving other types of brain function. Antioxidants or nutritional supplements which increase the available oxygen to fuel brain tissue recovery also improves outcomes.
Research indicates that approaches, such as Massage Therapy, CranioSacral Therapy, Integrative Manual Therapy, Acupuncture, Osteopathic Manual Treatment and Sensory Integration which improve respiratory function, rib cage mobility, and circulation to the head could also be helpful in getting better brain oxygenation and facilitate recovery from symptoms.
There is also evidence of the benefits of guided imagery, visualization and health coaching with the brain in mind.
I have worked with a number of children with a diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome. Results include improved learning skills, speech, vision, and fine motor control. Their parents have also noticed changes in their facial features (less of the FAS “look”) and overall movement and development.
For me the most interesting part of working with these children is noticing rhythms in their head, which I think of as reflective of neurotransmitter balance. These rhythms are from the field of Integrative Manual Therapy (Neurotransmitter Physical Functional Medicine (PFM’s). Taking IMT classes is one way to learn these motilities but I also find that looking at it from a Matrix Energetics perspective and looking at images of neurotransmitters can also be useful. My favorite Neurotransmitter image site is Olympus Micro

I have just come back from a class sponsored by the whole food nutritional company Standard Process and Meridian Autonomic Testing taught and developed by Frank and Matt Cucolo in Wolcott, CT. It is a wonderful class using an applied kinesiology approach to nutritional testing. Drs. Cucolo make it easy to learn this quick apprach to assessing what areas of the body could benefit from some support.

The Meridian Autonomic Testing points (many of which follow acupuncture points) can also be used for Matrix Energetics Two Pointing, Integrative Manual Therapy Dowsing, CranioSacral Unwinding and more.

It is just all fun stuff.

Perhaps today is the day to improve your physical, emotional and social health. Starting with Descarte the mind, thoughts and consciousness have been considered quite separate from the physical body. There are people who see changing their mind as a much simpler thing than changing their physical appearance or physical body’s health.

In this day and age, with the advent of Quantum Physics, New Physics approaches, Matrix Energetics and the whole field of Energy Medicine, perhaps this is the day to apply ideas from psychology and mind based approaches to the physical body and vice versa.

There has been much written about using our minds, thoughts, images and ideas to change our behavior, something that is often seen as being in the psychological realm but what of the behavior of our cells. Is it possible to apply the same concepts of psychology, learning, growth and growing up to our physical bodies at a cellular level?

Can we visualize overall health in the realms of the physical, emotional and social and have an impact for ourselves, our family, friends and clients?

I know the answer is yes and think the way to do it is by noticing and exploring the best passage ways in that moment. The doors leading into those passage ways of healthy change come from many fields of study, many countries, many people. As the Japanese say, "There are many ways to get to the top of Mount Fuji."
